Old Grazer

BEA102-0022

In June these hungry bears emerge from the den looking for high nutritional foods to start adding the weight they lost during the winter. In this region of Alaska, clams and Sedge grass accomplish this until the salmon runs occur. This coastal brown bear sow, Ursus arctos, had just come down from the high mountains. She was very hungry and as you can tell the winter had been pretty harsh to her body. She was in an all out state of consuming the nutrient-rich Sedge grass.
